Soccer in Uruguay

Soccer or football is not only the most celebrated sport but also Uruguay's national sport. Uruguay's national team has won many tournaments, but its first win in the Olympics took place in 1924. Uruguay's love for the sport has led them to have some of the most talented players of all time, including Diego Forlán, Luis Suárez, and Enzo Francescoli. The World Cup is a sporting event held every four years. Uruguay hosted the first World Cup in 1930, which they won, along with their win in 1950. Uruguay's national team went on strike and declined to participate from 1934 to 1938 due to the refusal of some European teams to participate in the 1930 edition. Along with their two World Cups, they have two Olympic gold medals and 15 Copa America wins. Even though they may be one of South America’s smallest countries, Uruguay’s national soccer success has built them one of the best living franchises.
