The Grande
Range

The Grande Range is a range of hills in east Uruguay; typically made from granite. The Spanish translation is Chuchilla Grande. It forms a geographical wall between the negro river and Mirim Lagoon at the border of Uruguay and Brazil. The Negro River also plays a big role because it intersects with the Yi River to lead into Grande del Durazno Range. These hills stretch around 220 miles south of the Brazilian border, almost reaching the Atlantic coast. The average height of a hill in the Grande Range is just below 600. The highest peak in this range is Mount Catedral – it also happens to also be the largest mountain in Uruguay. Mount Catedral has an elevation of 1,683 feet. Parts of these mountains tend to have sharp rocks sticking through the soil, which can make traversing the peaks of the mountain difficult. The Grande Range is a very significant part of Uruguay’s Geography.
